Jason goes from fishing to fishing

Jason, from Alberta,  has been travelling all over the coast and Vancouver Island on his fishing vacation, exploring rivers with his flyrods.  Today was a change of pace to go salmon fishing from a boat .
We fished with salmon plugs on the downrigger, so when the line releases from the clip, it is just you and the fish. A couple of lovely chinooks gave great fights.

These salmon are feeding on large schools of large herring and even hake, which are eating shrimp.  We caught up one dogfish shark by the tail and while I was unhooking him some of those shrimp fell out of his mouth.  Those are some of the important ingredients in the soup of Georgia Strait.

Family Day

Tony and Debbie brought their girls Tyler and Julia salmon fishing. It was a change from their usual trout fishing and camping family vacation. They had a day exploring Quadra Island and Rebecca Spit and on a different day they took a trip on a whale watching excursion. As it happened, a humpback whale came near while we were fishing and blew a spray close enough to give a surprise.

Fishing was great with fast and slow times during a full day. We started out with action, boated one, released a coho and and an undersized chinook and that was followed by a long dry spell.  We searched and moved out to the islands to try a pretty spot, but only had one bite, and then doubled back.  Patience and good attitudes were rewarded.  Right time , right place and the bite was on. Everyone caught at least one salmon, and it was Tyler who had the big one, and a workout to bring him to the net.  Good job Tyler and good team fishing !

Beverly and Mark with Paul and Mary-Lou

Vacationing on Quadra Island, sisters and hubbies take a morning fishing trip for fun and tasty fresh fish.
Mary-Lou , you didn't get in the picture, but we know you are the one most interested in cooking some salmon treats. Enjoy.

Jason's morning

Jason is interested in all the details of salmon fishing.  Farming on the prairies leaves some room for learning about the coast.  Bonus to the fishing, he caught two fine chinooks and a lingcod , which is his limit for those fish. Enjoy the good eats with your family !.

Michael and Beth, with Steve and Bessie

Michael and Beth and I have been fishing together since the mid 1980s.  So that is about 30 years of annual pilgrimages from their home in the Okanogan.  For the last three years or so, Steve and Bessy have joined in , and Bessie has earned the reputation of catching the largest fish.
In the recent few years, Dolphins Resort has become the venue of choice for this crew and their two days of fishing. Great accommodations, great food, great view, they love the staff, and Dolphins understands sportfishing, which helps for fish processing and details like boat lunches .

Beth escapes the photos at the dock, but she held up this hatchery marked coho for this photo. I forgot my camera on day one when we had bigger fish , but who wants to hold up the bigger fish anyways ?

Buddy Boat Brant did a great guiding job.
See you all next year !

Sotsols return again

These Sotsols have been returning for over 30 years !!   Well,  JB isn't old enough for that, he's the next generation,  but the original crew has been returning annually like the salmon, and the seasons, since the mid 1980s.  Many of the originals have departed to the happy fishing grounds.  Here we all are again , enjoying each other's company, basking in the surroundings, and enjoying all the fish ,while hoping for a really big one.

Check this fishing out Cuz

Ron invited his cousin Ed to come out and experience salmon fishing.  Ron has been spending summers in these parts for years , avoiding the Arizona summer heat.  Ed comes from Mid -west walleye fishing,  which is quite different , isn't it !   That was a busy afternoon fellas.

Extended family , multi trips

There's Rich and Selena with their boys Jesse and Aiden, from Vancouver.  They are here because of a wonderful lucky contact I had with Stan and Silvia, of Salt Spring Island.

And of course , there's Mimi.

Two days with this extended family , we made four half day trips, with various combinations of people. I enjoyed each and every one.
Thanks Silvia and Stan, for setting up this whole crew. .

Thursday 6 July 2017

Kevin and Doug

Kevin brought his Dad,  Doug,  out with him from Alberta to share a great fishing trip.  Originally planning two half day mornings, we snuck in an evening short trip to begin it all.  Doug was at the top of his game.

Hey, the catch from Day 2 and Day 3 look so identical I had to look up the photo spec history to make sure these photos were different days ,
 See you next year !

Bob and Karen, zip

No photo for Bob and Karen. This could happen. On an afternoon fill-in, between mornings that brought in 3 chinooks, nothing caught this afternoon. Are mornings always better ?  No. But today it was so. I gave them a discount and an offer of a free hour next time, because I got sucked into a tacky crowd , not up to usual standard of experience.

Tuesday 4 July 2017

Cal, Rob , Kristen , Gerry

Brother , Sister , Bro-in law, get together to take Dad fishing.  Looking good, family.

Monday 3 July 2017

Chris and Linda and Steven

Chris and Linda get together with Steven for fun and adventure trips, and so here they are, coming in from Alberta and Victoria  for fishing .  It was a bit windy all morning out in the open, but they all enjoy the moods of the ocean so much ,we never did move in to try a more protected spot, until the photo.  Those fish will be fully appreciated for dinners.

Sunday 2 July 2017

Richard and Andrew

Richard and Andrew are from Alberta, but with strong ties in B.C.  Keeping plugged in to the coast lifestyle could mean salmon fishing. The fish agreed and cooperated this morning.
Thanks Lorraine for setting up this trip.
